Winter is knocking on the door so we thought we'd share some tips on how you and your family can stay healthy.

Eat well

For your best shot at staying healthy this winter, make sure you get at least three servings of vegetables each day, and two servings of fresh fruit. In addition, opt for whole grains when you can, and make sure you're taking in at least two servings of milk or yogurt each day.

Wash hands

Frequent hand washing is a must if you hope to keep germs at bay. Viruses and bacteria can live for hours on surfaces touched by an infected person. Then they are transferred to the next healthy person to come along. Make sure to wash your hands vigorously with soap and warm water for 10-15 seconds.

Get plenty of sleep

Make your body is fully capable of fighting off illnesses this winter by giving yourself plenty of sleep. Have a consistent bedtime routine that includes going to bed at the same time each night so that your body learns to anticipate sleep. As well, you might consider adding some habits that relax you at bedtime, such as a warm bath or reading a novel.

Exercise regularly

It's important to exercise regularly, even if only for 15 minutes a day. Get out, take a short walk and enjoy the cooler weather.

Manage your stress

You can't rid your life of all its stress, but you can try to limit its effects. Calm down. Have some herbal tea. Meditate. Don't worry. Be happy.

Stay hydrated

Keep your body hydrated. Drink the optimal amount of water. Decreased water intake and increased coffee and hot chocolate intake in winter contributes to dehydration, so watch your water intake this winter and stay hydrated.

Give yourself time to recover

If you feel that you are coming down with something like a sore throat, inflamed sinuses or bronchitis, slow down and get as much rest as possible to help the immune systems fight off the disease.
